Celestial Visions

Updated on 5th Mar, 2010

Vizyon is marking its debut at LFW 2010 Summer/Resort and to add that exotic touch, have collaborated with the finest of French fashions emerging talent. At the eve of their debut, FTV caught up with designer, Ninon Palisse and Shradha Murarka, Brand Manager, Vizyon.

By Sholeen Damarwala

Q: For the both of you, this will be your very first showing at LFW 2010. Are you’ll nervous?

Ninon Palisse: Yes! I am very nervous and excited; as it is the first time I present a personal collection in front of an audience that is not familiar with my name.

Shradha Murarka: We are very very excited to be here. We feel that this is the best platform that can be offered in the country. It is a great opportunity to share our collection with a wider audience, both within India and internationally

Q: Your collection is called Celestial Bodies, what has been the idea and inspiration behind the collection?

NP: I started the collection in Paris in the heart of winter, where I started compiling ideas and I finalized it in India. I wanted a collection that blended structural silhouettes and draped structures, that is how the idea of transformation of natural elements came to me. I found all of this poetic and saw it as a good beginning to start the collection. I took inspiration from art exhibitions in Paris as I am very inspired by impressionist art.

Q: Since you are designing for Vizyon, which is an Indian brand, did you veer towards using any specific Indian fabrics or adding any specific Indian touches to your designs?

NP: Silk is the predominant fabric in India, which I like to use as well, and the incredible access to embroidery has been a luxury that we don’t have easily in Paris. Most French houses do their embroidery in India. I hope to develop this more in my next collection. I am not aware enough of the Indian brands, but I am a big fan of Manish Arora whose style is fun and modern.

Q: How has your experience been working with each other so far? Do you plan to take this relationship forward?

SM: Ninon’s style is very refreshing and we felt that she could really offer great couture and excellent styling for the Indian audience and the brand. - She is so full of energy and
she is very open to challenges. Ninon’s style of working also fits our standards. Ninon has worked with some of the world's best designers and has a style that is sensational.

Q: You have worked with some of the most famous names in fashion such as Christian Lacroix, Emmanuel Ungaro and Chloe. How fundamental has that experience been in shaping your current design sense?

NP: It has taught me the methodology to work on a collection, which we can’t really learn at school. I have learnt their design process, how an idea becomes a design. Creativity is not in finding ideas, but to find the most beautiful way to realize them. For example, you want to make a draping silhouette, but how to make it beautiful is the most important exercise.

Q: Is this your first time to India? How has your experience been in India so far?

NP: This is my second trip to India. This is my first time in Mumbai – my experience has been positive, I have discovered the country through my collaboration with Vizyon and it’s really far from all the clichés we have in Europe. This country is open to contemporary fashion and is sensitive to all things beautiful.

Q: What are your future plans?

NP: To continue a collaboration in India as I truly believe in the link between Europe and India. Sharing knowledge has been one of the good things that have come out of globalization. I also want to bring back this Indian soul in my work in Europe.

SM: We would like to retail and have our own stores in cities eg Bombay and Delhi. We had recently participated at the market tradeshow in the US and we got a great response there. We would love to build our presence Internationally. Vizyon's ethos relates to international quality and fits with int
