Interview: Deanne Pandey, fitness entrepreneur

Updated on 18th Mar, 2010

Mother and entrepreneur, Deanne Pandey is Bollywood’s first lady of fitness. Sholeen Damarwala talks to her about bringing glamour back to the gym

From being a model to Bollywood's go-to fitness guru; what has the journey been so far?

When I was a model, a lot of people would approach me to write on fitness and I always wondered why they wouldn't approach an expert instead. I was one of the first women to weight train and I used to hear people compare my body to a man's. I agreed to write because at that point, the concept of holistic fitness was not understood properly. I would survey different gyms, try out classes and write about them. Finally, I went to Australia to do a fitness course. When I came back, I got a call from Pradeep Guha who asked me to train the contestants at the Miss India pageant. That was a big step, and after that, I couldn’t look back even if I wanted to!

You are the fitness guru to some of Bollywood's hottest bodies, from Bipasha Basu to Lara Dutta to John Abraham. What do each of these stars bring to their workout?

Surviving in the film industry is not easy and girls like Lara, Bipasha, Preity, who don't come from a Bollywood background, have really made it to the top. They are all very hard-working and that is why they are who they are in the industry today. They have made it on their grit and determination and they bring the same to their workouts. Lara, despite being hydrophobic, overcame her fears to do underwater stunts in Blue, which was very challenging. I am very proud of what she has achieved. Bipasha has come a long way. And of course Preity Zinta. While filming Salaam Namaste she went from a size 12 to a size 6 in just a month and her entire toned look created a big impact.

As a fitness expert you probably get a lot of clients asking you help them get the size zero body. Personally what is your take on the whole size zero fad?

I am very against the size zero obsession. I have always promoted a well balanced diet for a healthy body. Obviously you can’t push yourself too much or else your body and mind can give up. You can’t get obsessed with your body and weight because that is an illness. And if you are on the bigger size just be comfortable, as long as you’re fit you’re fine. I am 41 today and I have bulges but I am comfortable in my body because at my age I am way fitter than any 20 year old. So I feel proud of myself.

Tell us about your latest fitness range Bia Brazilia.

When I went to Brazil with Bipasha around 3 yrs ago for the shooting of Dhoom 2, I came across this gear called Bia Brazilia. I recognized a market for this in India. Although we do have superior brands here, their fits aren’t as good and they don’t experiment much with colours and styles. I thought to import some of the gear in small lots. It is all about wearing good fits and feeling good about yourself, and the amazing thing about this gear is that it tightens everything up so when you are working out you don’t have flab shaking.
