He started playing with cameras when he was 15 and eventually, that's what he makes his living off. Kenny Zaveri has shot ads for brands like EverYuth, RedTape, Safari, Big Bazar Fashion, Lovable lingerie and others.

What made you first pick up the camera?

Photography runs in my family's blood, it would seem. My grandparents started it all. They had set up a small portraiture studio which my father later took on, to manage. He upgraded the techniques and machinery, hired photographers, built a sales department - basically made it a flourishing business. Today we are a 50 year old firm.

At the age of 15, I started playing around with my grandparents' SLR camera. I was never interested in being an engineer, doctor etc - I knew that the camera would be my partner and profession for life

How did you work towards being a professional photographer?

Since my dad and brother were running the studio, I had a chance to study. I studies Professional Photography for two years, and found my passion for shooting people. I like moods, expressions; I wanted to shoot life as people feel it. I then assisted a photographer until I had the confidence to strike out on my own. Now I work from my own studio in Mumbai.

What would you count as some of your most memorable shoots?

An agency recently hired me for a hair product wherein I had to shoot a model. Shooting hair campaigns is not everyone's cup of tea - it requires maximum depth of field and complete detail so that each strand is visible. It was one of my most challenging shoots. I knew that this was my one chance to impress the agency - and they did get back to me for more assignments. It's something I really appreciate the agency for - for having faith in me.

Another 'memorable' shoot was one where I was to shoot the print ads for a TVC being made with Juhi Chawla. After hours of waiting, we were given a small corner of the set to shoot her in. That shoot never happened..

If you were not a photographer, what would you choose to be?

As I was never interested in holding any degree I never paid attention in school lectures. My all textbooks were filled with freehand designs and drawings. I think I would have been an artist.

How would you describe your photography style?

Besides advertising, I love shooting models with painting. I like to experiment.

What advice would you give to aspiring photographers?

Take up photography only if you have a passion for it and you're convinced it is what you want to do. And practice, practice, practice; experiment, experiment, experiment.
